The summer of 2007 was the wettest summer since records began in 1914, and the devastating floods that followed cost Britain an estimated £6billion in flood damages - a disturbing pattern set to continue unless we actively combat this destructive cycle.

The nation urgently needs to adopt a programme of building flood-resilient homes and communities that can live with the floods.

With a promised 3 million new homes needed by 2020 urgent action is required; developing Brownfield sites, regeneration of disused docks and water-spaces and the sustainable development of floodplains can provide a solution that allows the homes to be built in a sustainable and environmentally friendly fashion.

The sponsors behind this initiative have invited the most respected voices behind flood defence and floodplain development to answer a series of pertinent questions. The answers to these questions could help us overcome some extreme social and economical challenges that face us all now and in the very near future.

“By reducing the area that needs to be defended through new thinking in developing flood resistant buildings including fixed and floating structures that are flood resistant”

Professor George Fleming
Managing Director, Enviro Centre
